FROM CAMPUS TO CAREER
Student journeys that inspire
Every student has a story. From recent high school grads to working parents, our students represent the full spectrum of Illinois — and they’re all making incredible strides toward their goals.
Maya’s Story
Program: A.A.S. Diagnostic Medical Sonography College: Prairie State College
Maya, a first-generation college student and single mom, enrolled at Prairie State College after working retail jobs for nearly a decade. She chose the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program because she wanted a career that combined science, technology, and patient care — and one that would support her family.
With support from her professors, free on-campus tutoring, and flexible evening classes, Maya excelled. She recently completed a clinical internship at a local hospital and has already received a full-time job offer pending graduation.
NEW BEGINNINGS
“I used to think college wasn’t for people like me. But my instructors saw something in me — and now I’m just months away from graduating with honors.”
Where
she’s headed
Starting this fall, Maya will join the imaging team at South Suburban Health Center — and plans to return part-time to earn her bachelor’s degree through a university partnership program.

Carlos’s Story
Program: A.A. in Business Administration
College: Elgin Community College
Current Role: Founder & CEO, Ramirez Digital Marketing Group
Carlos enrolled at Elgin Community College straight out of high school, unsure of his path but eager to build something of his own. A small business marketing course lit the spark — and with guidance from his professors and the campus entrepreneurship center, Carlos launched his first freelance gig while still a student.
After transferring to a four-year university, he continued building his brand, eventually founding Ramirez Digital Marketing Group — a full-service agency that now works with small businesses across Illinois and beyond.
NEW BEGINNINGS
“My journey started with a community college business class and a dream. Today, I run a company that employs over 20 people — and I always look back at ECC as the foundation.”
Where
he is now
Carlos is not only a successful entrepreneur — he’s also a mentor and guest speaker at Elgin Community College, helping today’s students navigate the same path he once walked.
